Primary School's Sports Funding

What is the Sports Premium?

The Government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2014 - 2020 to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding will be allocated to primary school headteachers.

The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools. OFSTED will play a significant role in ensuring that schools target this funding in areas which will lead to clear outcomes in raising standards and opportunities in PE and school sport for all children throughout the Primary Phase.  All schools will receive a lump sum of £8,000 plus a premium of £5 per pupil for the next two academic years.

How will we be spending the Sports funding and who will benefit?

The Governors agree that the money must be used so that:

  • all children benefit regardless of sporting ability
  • that the most able children are given the opportunity to compete in advanced tournaments
  • that staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional development

The Sports funding will be used to:

  • Increase the skill level of staff in the delivery of quality P.E. teaching.

  • Buy exciting and stimulating resources to facilitate the teaching of PE.
  • Increase participation in sport and PE by offering free and subsidized after-school sports coaching.

  • Extend after-school sports activities. We now offer a range of school clubs, accessed by children from Key Stages one and two. We have built capacity by employing sports coaches to work alongside our teachers.

  • Develop a safe but active use of the playground at break times.

  • Fund our membership to LPESSN within Southwark

  • Provide opportunities for children to compete. We feel it is important that children have the chance to represent their school and take part in competitive sport against other schools.

Purpose of funding

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses for the funding include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • new or additional Change4Life sport clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing participation in school games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
  • providing places for pupils in after school sport clubs and holiday clubs.

How will we be spending the Sports funding and who will benefit? At St Joseph’s we believe that the money must be used so that:

  • All children benefit regardless of sporting ability
  • Sporting opportunities are expanded to include more after school clubs
  • That the most able children are given the opportunity to compete in advanced tournaments and represent the borough.
  • That staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional development

Our Sports funding will be used to:

  • Provide Membership of the London PE & School Sport Network based at Bacon’s College, Rotherhithe.
  • Increase the skill level of staff in the delivery of quality E. teaching, through CPD
  • Buy exciting and stimulating resources to facilitate the teaching of PE
  • Extend after-school sports activities and provide those during curriculum time to experience new sports, for example BMX or archery.
  • Purchase equipment to develop a safe but active use of the playground at break times.
  • Making links to other community sports providers – encouraging pupils to join out of school sports clubs
  • Encouraging our children to improve their leadership skills through sport –
  • through sports leader initiative.
  • Provide opportunities for children to compete against other schools and go on to represent the borough.

Impact:

We will evaluate the impact of the Sports Premium funding as part of our normal self-

evaluation and provision mapping arrangements. We will look at how well we use our Sport Premium to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sporting provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.

Measuring the impact of the activities provided with sports premium funding can be achieved in different ways. We will look at progress in PE as well as other areas of development such as self-esteem, confidence and the numbers of pupils involved in sporting activities in and out of school. Assessments are made both informally using our school assessment systems as well as feedback from staff and visitors to the school. We will also evaluate the impact of professional development opportunities in improving teaching and learning in PE through discussions with Subject leaders and the Senior Leadership Team. We are working with LPESSN to implement a formal assessment system within the school.

So far the provision of SSP has allowed us to offer a much wider range of after school and extra-curricular activities, ranging from Taekwondo to BMX racing. The funding has allowed us to buy new equipment, train staff and develop a positive feel towards PE in the school. Our children are engaged and enjoy PE and leave school each day with a positive attitude towards exercise. Since the SSP has been provided we have seen our school excel in local competition, with children representing Southwark at Athletics, Cross Country and Football at the London Youth Games.
