Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you had a good half term and I am glad to see that everyone has returned safe and sound. Ash Wednesday occurred in the half term holiday. We are now in Lent. This is the time we prepare for the remembrance of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. Lent is a special time when the Church invites everyone to examine their lives to make Lenten promises and make a fresh start with God.
Maths Week
Thank you to Ms Rutherford and Ms Mullen who orchestrated a great maths week. The children did many activities to promote their maths learning. The week ended with ‘Maths Factor’ for the Infant School and a ‘Maths Raps’ assembly for the Junior School. Both demonstrated high quality maths learning and excellent team work skills. The ‘Maths Factor’ prize went to Orange Class for their 5x table song! Well done Orange class! Year 4 won the prize for the most money raised through their cake sale. Well done Year 4!
Get Colourful
On Thursday 22nd February, the school held a charity day for the Evelina Children’s Hospital. This is a cause that is very close to our hearts as it has supported many of our children. The children looked wonderful in their bright colours - bringing joy on what was weather-wise, a rather grey day. We have raised £532.23 so far! Thank you for your generosity.
Book Week
Book Week begins on Monday 26th February and World Book Day is on Thursday 1st March. In preparation for this week of literary events, the school held a very successful costume making workshop for parents/carers and their children. Thank you to Ms McKiernan for organising and leading this event. Here are some of the comments from our evaluation: ‘We had a fantastic time! Many thanks to everyone for making this workshop so much fun!’ ‘I loved being able to do this with my child – was really lovely to do it together.’ ‘I loved the time spent with my child and the other Mums.’ ‘I had a lot of fun because there were many things to use and it helped me a lot because I didn’t know how to do it and the teachers helped me. It was the best thing I did with my daughter!’ ‘Helped us to be even more creative about the costume than we otherwise would and provided access to fabrics and materials we wouldn’t otherwise have had.’ ‘I didn’t just like it, I loved it because I looked up the costumes online and they were so expensive.’
This year the focus of Book Week is ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak. This book has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. We have ‘West End in Schools’ coming in to do drama, dance and story-telling workshops as well as ‘buddy-reading’ and an ‘extreme-reading’ photograph competition. On Friday 2nd March between 8.30-9am there is going to be a ‘Book Swap’ in the Hall. Please come along and do a ‘swap’. Light refreshments will be served. I hope the children enjoy the book and have a great week! Thank you to Mrs Kilbey and Mrs McDuff for organising the week – it is going to be brilliant!
First Holy Communion Meeting
There is a meeting on Thursday 1st March in the school hall at 4.30pm for parents of children making their First Holy Communion and Sacrament of Reconciliation. You must attend this meeting if you want your child to make their Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday 3rd March at Sacred Heart Church following the 10am Mass. If you cannot make the Mass, arrive at 10.30am. Mrs Mokogwu, Mrs Chys, Ms Kirrane and Mrs Gallagher will be in attendance.
Coffee Morning
Please join us for a coffee morning on Thursday March 8th between 9-9.30am. We look forward to seeing you.
